Dr. Charlene R. Chan
Dr. Charlene R. Chan has been practicing in Sebastopol since 1991 and continues to be involved in learning new techniques and updating her skills in the field of orthodontics.
Our community is very committed to family; it is a privilege to be a part of such a caring people. With all the new developments in our field today, I enjoy being a part of this wonderful specialty more than ever.
Dr. Chan is a graduate of Loma Linda University, school of Dentistry (D.D.S.) and the University of the Pacific, San Francisco (M.S.D.). She was associate professor of Orthodontics at Pacific from 1991-2006. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Upon completing her specialty training, Dr. Chan joined her father, Dr. Ernest Chan in private practice (begun in 1980) here in Sebastopol, CA. They worked side by side for 10 years until Dr. Ernest Chan retired. During that time, she gained valuable skills and knowledge from her father’s experience. “Those years are some of the most treasured times of my life. He has shared his wisdom and experience, as a colleague and as a father. ”
Dr. Chan has volunteered with numerous organizations including the Volunteer Health Professionals, the Junior League of Napa-Sonoma, the Redwood Dental Society, Hanna Boys Center and various local study clubs. She is a member of many organizations including: American Association of Orthodontists, American Board of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and Redwood Empire Dental Society.
Dr.Chan lives with her husband, Ken Ip, an ophthalmologist, and kindergartener, Ryan. They enjoy the outdoors, gardening, hiking, kayaking, mountaineering, swimming, skiiing, classical and jazz music.

Dr. Monica L. Chmiel
Dr. Chmiel is committed to excellence in patient care, sharing the vision and mission statement of Chan Orthodontics. As evident in her caring chair side manner, Dr. Chmiel thoroughly enjoys working with people of all ages. Her skills and knowledge of the latest technologies and advances in the orthodontic profession will bring additional assets to the practice by keeping us at the forefront of orthodontics.
Dr. Chmiel was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario where she received a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors and continued her education receiving her dental degree at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Chmiel attended the orthodontic program at the University of California San Francisco, receiving her Master of Science degree in oral and craniofacial sciences and a specialty Certificate in Orthodontics. Her clinical skills have been recognized by being selected to present for the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics at the American Association of Orthodontists conference. Her research studying the effect of lasers and fluoride on caries progression in demineralized enamel obtained the top award from the Academy of Laser Dentistry. She is an active member of many professional affiliations including: American Dental Association, California Dental Association, San Francisco Dental Society, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, and American Association of Orthodontists. Her lifelong commitment to learning involves spending significant time attending conferences and continuing education courses to continue to provide the most advanced treatment possible. She strives to create a positive environment where patients are happy and feel well taken care of. Her passion is to educate, motivate and communicate with patients to achieve healthy bites and beautiful smiles together.
Dr. Chmiel is an avid runner and participated in both the Philadelphia and New York City marathons. For the past two summers, she’s run the San Francisco half marathon and plans to make this a yearly tradition. Her other interests include hiking, reading, taking road trips to explore new places with family and friends, and caring for the marine life in her salt water aquarium.
